Many people ask these questions because they know the taste and benefits of cultivating Red Bellied Pacu or Nutter fish. If possible, try to watch the video completely. It will definitely benefit you too.

These are just some of the few doubts about rearing nutter fishes. But there is more to it than that. Before we get into that, let’s learn a little bit about the Red Bellied Pacu or Nutter fish.

Understand About Nutter (Red-Bellied Pacu)

Red-Bellied Pacu or Nutter fish belongs to the family of dangerous piranha fishes of the Nile river. It is also known as Avoli Machan locally in Kerala as it has the shape of Avoli fish. The red color, which is found below the abdomen, maybe the reason why they are reared as ornamental fishes in aquariums as well. This fish has gained a lot of popularity among fish farmers due to its taste and shape as well as its rapid growth.

It is commonly grown in natural ponds and other ponds such as cement ponds. In Natural ponds, they reach up to 1 kg within a time span of 8 months. But in other artificial ponds, they can weigh a half kilo within six months. Farmers who grow nutter fish in natural ponds for more than a year get fish weighing about two to three kilograms. Red-Bellied Pacu or Nutter can grow up to 30 cm in length.

We have raised and harvested a thousand nutter fish twice in this pond. Both have weighed over 400 grams on average in just four months. We raised the nutter fish on the farm by feeding them pellets from a company called Growel. In addition, Azolla and other leafy vegetables like yam leaves and drumstick leaves are also fed. Food scraps from the kitchen can also be fed. However, whatever type of feed is given, it should be given only as required and it should be ensured that there is no food waste in the pond. Waste from over-fed food can lie at the bottom of the fish pond and cause the water to deteriorate very quickly.

Let us now turn to the important doubts about Nutter Farming.

  • I have heard that when you raise nutter fish in a flat pond, they will bite a tear of the flat sheet, is it true?

Many farmers who have grown nutter fish in the flat sheet pond have had the experience of tearing and damaging the Nylon sheet. The sheet had no damage when we first raised it. But after the second harvest, when the water was removed, small holes were seen in many places. That’s why we decided to replace the flat sheet in this pond with cement. A friend who made the pool out of a 700 gsm sheet and raised the nutter fish in it shared the experience of fish tearing the sheet. Now if one intends to raise nutter fish in a pond, try to use nylon sheets above a minimum of 550 gsm. Also, try to feed the fish at the right time without any delay.

  • Is there any legal impediment or difficulty in raising nutter fish?

When I inquired about this matter, I got different opinions from different people. Although any ban on cultivating nutter fish has not been introduced, the department does not in any way promote nutter fish cultivation.

The main reason for this is the nature of the fish itself. Due to their aggressive nature, they pose a threat to other fishes found in rivers and streams. This is also a special concern for those who cultivate nutter fish in natural ponds.

  • Can nutter fish be reared together with other fish?

Nutter fish can be reared along with other fishes. But it is better to grow it alone than to grow it together. We initially raised 250 nutter fish and 250 Tilapia together. At the time of harvest six months later, the nutter fish were all well grown in size. But the growth of Tilapia was very low. This is because nutter fish are very aggressive. Tilapia fishes are not able to feed themselves at the time of feeding. In addition, the nutter is likely to attack other fish.

The buyers agreed that the nutter fish, which is fed on pellet feed, tastes good. Similarly, if it gains weight above half a kilo within six months, it is good growth. Nutter fish breeders must comply with biosecurity conditions to protect our water resources. You can comment on your doubts and comments about the video below.
