How to Read Your Drop Checker
The reagent acts as a pH indicator that reacts to the CO2 off-gassing from your aquarium water into the glass bulb.
The Color Guide:
BLUE (Low CO2): Your CO2 levels are too low. Your plants may not be getting enough carbon to photosynthesize effectively. Action: Slowly increase your CO2 injection rate.
GREEN (Optimal CO2): Perfect! You have achieved the ideal balance of roughly 30 ppm of dissolved CO2. Action: Keep your injection rate exactly where it is.
YELLOW (High CO2 / Danger): Your CO2 levels are dangerously high and could rapidly suffocate your fish and shrimp. Action: Immediately decrease your CO2 injection and increase surface agitation to add oxygen.
Installation & Maintenance Guide
-
Fill the Bulb: Turn the glass drop checker upside down. Carefully squeeze 10 to 15 drops of the indicator reagent into the bulb.
-
Trap the Fluid: Slowly rotate the drop checker completely upright. The fluid should become trapped in the round bulb reservoir without spilling out the bottom opening.
-
Install in Tank: Press the suction cup firmly against the inside glass of your aquarium, positioning the drop checker a few inches below the water's surface. Ensure the open bottom is facing straight down.
-
Wait for Results: The color change is not instantaneous. Allow 2 to 4 hours for the reagent to fully react with the tank water and display an accurate color reading.
-
Routine Maintenance: Replace the reagent fluid every 3 to 4 weeks, or whenever the color begins to look faded or cloudy, to ensure continued accuracy.
