Subsidy For Biofloc Fish Farming in Kerala

The Government of Kerala has announced a subsidy of up to 40% on Biofloc fish farming under the Subiksha Kerala Scheme. The total cost of the Biofloc fish farming in kerala, which is jointly implemented by the Department of Local Self Government and the Fisheries Department, is estimated to be Rs 138,000 per unit. The subsidy is forty percent of this amount which is 55200 rupees. The remaining amount is the Fish farmer’s investment. In this video, we will first give you an introduction to Biofloc fish farming. The details of the scheme can then be described later. So do try to watch the video completely.

Welcome to another video of Onyx Aqua Farm. If you like the video, don’t forget to share and subscribe to our channel. It is not possible to give a complete overview of Biofloc fish farming through this short video. So it is better not to start fish farming just by watching this video but try to contact the nearest Fisheries Department office.

What is Biofloc Fish Farming

Biofloc Fish farming is another form of high density fish farming. There are a number of reasons to try this new methods of Aquaculture compared to the time when fish farming were commonly carried out in ponds and other tanks. One is that the fishes grown in ordinary ponds couldn’t meet the increasing demand. As the demand for fish increased, the amount of land for fish farming decreased.

And all these lead to the new fish farming practices that have now come into being. Aquaponics is one of those. We have already explained Aquaponics in several of our previous videos. Here the purification of water is done by pumping the water from the fish pond to an external filter system using a pump. And thus for Aquaponics RAS-like farming methods filter system, grow bed, etc, must be prepared. Compared to other types of fish farming this unit is far more expensive. However, fish raised in a natural pond of 50 cents can be reared from 1 cent Aquaponics farming systems.

But Biofloc is one of the newest intensive fish farming practices in our country. Israel introduced this method of farming into the world. As said earlier in Aquaponics, filtration of water takes place in an external unit.

How Biofloc Working

This is where we need to understand the importance of Biofloc fish farming. Ammonia, which is produced from the waste of fish and fish feed, is decomposed into nitrate which is toxic substance and can threaten the growth of fishes. But in Biofloc fish farming, flock also grew alongside fish in the pond. Flock is a rich composition of living bacteria, algae, and other aquatic flora and fauna.

Now I hope you understood what happens in the Biofloc tank? Ammonia in water is broken down by these hetrotopic bacteria and are converted to nitrate. This nitrate is then absorbed by the algae and other flora n fauna growing in the pond. Thus the ammonia in the water remains zero as this process occurs continuously in the tank.

Now let’s see the benefits of this Biofloc Fish Farming.

1 – One of the most important advantages of Biofloc fish farming is that the production rate is higher compared to other techniques. Initially 2000 fishes were raised in a 4-diameter round tank. However, due to inadequate growth, the Fisheries Department is now proposing to grow 1000 fishes.

2 – Let’s see the second advantage. Bacteria, algae and other animal herbivores collectively known as Floc, which is grown alongside fish in a Biofloc tank, are also good live food for the fishes. It is a good source of feed for fish at all times.

While these are the advantages of Biofloc fish farming, there are some important things to consider. Let’s take a look.

What are Things to Be Needed to Start Biofloc Fish farming

Round shaped tank

Round shaped tank is ideal for Biofloc fishing. It is best to give a small slope towards the center of the pond.

Aeration in Biofloc Fish pond

One of the most important requirements of Biofloc fish farms is Aeration in Fish pond. Oxygen is a must for fish and other flocks in fish farming. Aeration is mandatory in order to have a good movement of the water in the pond. Care should be taken to avoid anaerobic conditions in Biofloc fish farming. Electricity backup is therefore a very important component. Hailea’s air pumps and aeroxy tubes are the most commonly used in Biofloc fish farming.

Pro-biotics for produce FlocAnother important requirement of Biofloc fish farming is floc. This is called pro-biotic. There are several methods of preparing pro-biotics. It’s hard to explain through this one short video. Let’s say in another video.

Carbon source in Biofloc

One of the most important things for Biofloc is carbon source. What is this carbon? Two things are essential for the growth of bacteria: one carbon and the other nitrogen. This nitrogen required is obtained from ammonia. So it is very important to supply carbon. Porridge water, jaggery, wheat powder, baking soda can be used as a carbon source.

Water Quality Test

In high density fish farming it is important to take good care of the fish ponds as the flocks are growing along with the fish. Always check for Ammonia, PH, nitrate, nitrite, and Floc density in the water of the fish pond.

It is also advisable to write down every day the test results. The test kit to check it out is available in the market today.
